Marcel Tolkowsy- Pioneer in Diamond Cutting

The person recognized as the pioneer of diamond cutting was the Belgian mathematician, Marcel Tolkowsy. In 1919, Tolkowsky proposed what he thought was the most desirable proportions of a diamond. Fewer than 1% of all diamonds even get close to Tolkowsky’s measurements.

It is certain a well-proportioned diamond is superior in brilliance to one that is poorly cut. In general, a diamond which is fashioned too deep in relation to its diameter might sometimes have a dead black area in the middle of the gem. One that is cut too spread might have a tendency to look glassy. A fine cut diamond, on the other hand, has the ability to capture every drop of light that enters through the table, then bend the light back up through the table and crown to the observer, dispersing white light into all of its spectral colors.

The cutting experiments of Marcel Tokowlsky gave birth to the present round brilliant cut and the ideal cut diamond proportions.
